Presence of a Rain Forest

On a misty day at Sol Duc Falls, I experimented with several compositions but was not really happy with any of them. I just could not capture the scale of the falls and portray them in the grand fashion that I had hoped. After reviewing several images, I thought of something else; perhaps I should give up on the grand waterfall and just work on capturing the mood of the forest.

I ended up happy with the result, not what I was going for, but a pleasing image too me at least :)

Looking like a great location! I would like to visit it too. But a bit far from Germany...

Looking at the right side if the image, it doesn't support the fall, except framing the right side. You can cut it away.

The water at the bottom is alo not helping. Additionally separated by the fallen trunk. I would cut that also.

Below you find my suggestion to strenthen the image.

I considered a crop closely matching your suggestion, along with numerous others. The crop does focus the attention to the falls, but still fails to bring a good sense of scale to the subject. The George is actually very deep and rather impressive, but you really would not know it from the image.

Unfortunately the composition options were limited, and even this position required some very creative tripod use - think of it being used as a very long "selfie stick".

Though I think your crop has merit, personally I still prefer the 1:1 aspect.

Thanks so much for the feedback, I really have been going back and forth with this one, even at first I just though of it as a throw away image - it has since grown on me :)

Would be curious to see what others prefer.
