Hey Luis, nice stuff. Sorry to hear you feel that your struggling creatively, could I ask what steps you're taking to combat that? Two of my suggestions would be - a) Look at a lot less wedding photography online. You can find yourself falling into the trap of just trying to mimic the standard styles and that can make you feel confined and limit your experimentation. Try to look at a different branch of photography and ask how can you shoot your weddings in that style. For me I came into weddings through skateboard and concert photography and have tried to bring a lot of that style with me. - b) Look at wedding photographers who are doing different and creative work. I personally love the work of Dan O'day www.danodayphotoblog.com and Todd Hunter McGaw www.toddhuntermcgaw.com.au/blog. These guys always inspire me to be braver and more honest within my work.
Really appreciate the feedback! I don't come from any photographic background although I did draw often when I was younger so, quite frankly don't like calling myself a photographer even though I do have paying clients.
When it comes to the actual event day I have a tough time budgeting experimentation time when on the job, nerves at times get the best of me and so I have typically scouted locations, played out scenarios and organize a creative process based on what I think works... which i know sounds boring. However, sometimes listening to the client's "oh can we do this?" has lead to great some photographs.
Thank you for the references and I'll get back after my next wedding!
You'll rock it, you're always gonna have to get the safe shots but let yourself try something new each shoot. Tell the couple that you're trying something and it might not work, they'll usually appreciate being part of something exciting and different.
