The Wave

In order to photograph The Wave, one must first win the coveted lottery drawing. Over 280,000 (data from a couple of years ago) people apply for a permit each year and only 64 people are allowed to hike The Wave each day. I applied a few times, but didn't win. Luckily, one of the members from the St. George photo club got a permit and I jumped on the opportunity to attend the trip.

We set out well before dawn to begin the hike in Coyote Buttes North. Since it was the middle of September, I brought plenty of sodium-laced water, which meant only one camera and lens and no tripod. The hike out was great in the cooler temps, but going back to the car in the heat was exhausting.

This photo was taken at the entrance to The Wave, before the main bowl. I liked it because of the reflections in the pool of water, converging shadows and leading lines. This was one of the rare times, I wish had a wider lens. Maybe, I'll get another chance to hike it in the winter and can bring a second lens instead of 5 bottles of water.

Handheld, single-image capture at 1/60, f/13, ISO 100, 24mm. Sony A1 with Sony f/2.8 24-70mm lens. Edited in LrC.

Anna, great detail!, wonderful, exposure, and post processing of a globally popular subject. In response to you wish of a wider lens and my only criticism is that you had shot this in a shorter and more wide file format image ratio, perhaps 2:3 or is it 3:2 ratio. Great job!

I did shoot a few wide shots and it lopped off the top of the formation in the center, which just didn't work. So....I must go back. The day in advance permit is my best shot. Luckily, I only live a few hours away.
