Are Photo Competitions Worth It?

In the never-ending struggle to get your work seen by the right people that can help advance your career, contests and competitions are one of the most accessible. But, after all is said and done, are they worth it?

International Collaboration Project: Photographers Finding Success Together

For photographers Frank Diaz and Deb Young, success is manifesting in many ways; features in industry publications, awards, and gallery representation. By setting their egos aside and collectively using their talents to create an ever growing body of work, the duo’s International Collaboration Project (ICP) continues to gain steam. But the project’s weight cannot be measured by the amount of print sales or awards it has already collected. The nature of the project defines their career and makes the rest of us question our solitary nature as photographers.

Sick Trailer for the New GoPro HD Hero2

So I am going through some of the slow-mo HD camera options that are on the market right now for an adventure I will be taking soon, and I stumbled upon the new GoPro HD Hero2. On their site they have one of the illest trailers I have ever seen for a camera, and I had to watch it several times. This isn't an ad for the camera and I am not saying that this is the one I will buy, but man what else compares? With that said, watch this trailer, it really is rad to see what kind of punch that tiny package can deliver! (that's what she said)
[BTSV] The Wednesday Rundown 3.7.12

Howdy and welcome to the Wednesday Rundown. This week we have some behind the scenes video footage from a documentry called the Perfect Runner. They have taken slow motion video from several runners to break down what it takes to have a "perfect run". The footage from the Weisscam is pretty slick. Check out the shoot with a Jenny Craig model. If you have a video that you think we might like to post, please click on "submit content" above.

It Is Okay to Not Be Productive During COVID-19 Down Time

Naturally, the photography industry has greatly suffered during the pandemic, and many of us have found ourselves at home, dealing with job cancellations and empty client books. But, just because you have suddenly acquired valuable time on your hands that you normally would have spent on your business or creative endeavors, it does not mean you need to push yourself into extreme productivity.

[Video] The New ARRI L7 LED Fresnel Lights Are Pretty Awesome

Most of the readers here at Fstoppers are photographers but we also have a lot of videographers as well. Most of us photographers are completely out of the loop when it comes to the tools videographers use day in and day out, and some of them are pretty cool. Mitch Gross demonstrates some of the features found in the new ARRI L7 LED Fresnel Lights and they look pretty awesome. Having WB control over your light color is pretty awesome and could come in handy for a lot of photography applications. These Fresnel lights are pretty expensive at $2700 but hopefully this technology will show up in other less expensive lights too. How cool would it be if our future speedlights had both strobe light and controlable LED lights for video (hint hint Nikon!)
Is Consistency Actually Important? What Even Is It?

Consistency is undoubtedly important for many reasons. For those that want to develop a style that makes their work identifiable, defining what consistency means to them is a crucial step. For some, consistency may not matter at all.

[Tools] How Fast Does Your Webpage Load?

How important is your webpage load time to you? This morning while troubleshooting my webpage, I stumbled across this amazing tool. Instead of emailing all your friends to test your page, simply type your address on www.pingdom.com and see the results. It will show in detail what elements and code slowed down your page. Good for troubleshooting load time issues.
February Photo Contest: Win A Photoflex Octodome

Every month here at Fstoppers we run a photo contest that is judged by one of our readers. We'd like to congratulate Frank Lin for winning the January Fstoppers Forum Photo Contest. Click the previous link to see his winning photograph and watch for his banner at the top of the site to see more of Frank's work. As we do every month, the winner of the contest gets to pick the next theme and Frank has chosen "BIRTH". This month's winner will also win a custom image and website link on the Fstoppers rotating banner above and also a Photoflex Octodome Extra Small Kit which is our goto soft light for location shooting. As always, our contests are judged by the winner of the previous month's contest so you have to impress Frank not anyone on the Fstoppers Staff. The Ultimate Guide To HDSLR Video Lighting

If you haven't checked out Mark Wallace's Adorama TV channel over at youtube you really should. He does a great job creating informative and useful videos on all sorts of digital photography and videography topics. In his most recent video, Mark shows a lot of different types of hot lights that can be used for lighting both your behind the scenes videos as well as your photoshoots themselves. He also talks a bit about how to light different subjects including how to light for a two person interview. Here at Fstopppers, we are using the Photoflex Starlights for our video productions. We really enjoy the versatility they give us but of course you can use anything that fits your budget. I know photographers sometimes stray away from constant lighting in favor of strobes so if you have any questions or thoughts about how to use these to the fullest, leave a comment below.
Top 10 WeeklyFstops: Music

This week's theme called for "music" and the results were great as usual. There is a lot of diversity on all of our WeeklyFstop lists and this one is no exception. One featured photographer almost had to be disqualified after turning in multiple entries. Luckily they both rocked and the show went on!

Sony Reveals Four New Lenses

Breaking: The guys over at Sony Alpha Rumors have reported on the four newly announced lenses offered by Sony for their FE mount α7 series cameras. According to Sony Alpha Rumors the long-speculated Zeiss fast-aperture prime is a 35mm f/1.4 distagon. While details are still incoming we now know that the lens I had hoped would be an 85mm is, in fact, a 35mm. Heartbreak.

In addition to the 35mm f/1.4 Sony also announced a 90mm f/2.8 macro "G" lens which features OSS optical stablilization. This lens will be awesome for portrait and macro...

Canon Recalls Popular S100 Cameras

Canon is recalling the popular S100 line of point and shoot cameras due to a lens error. The error occurs when a part disconnects on the inside when exposed to high temperatures or humidity. Only certain serial numbers are affected, so make sure yours in not one of them.

Wedding Photography Tip: Fight For Your Artistic Vision

Today, it is pretty common for a couple getting married to hire both a wedding photographer and videographer. When I meet a videographer for the first time I usually try to feel him or her out and figure out the best way that we can work together as team. In most cases we can both work to create great memories for our clients, but, if the videographer happens to step into my shot and ruin a picture, I have no choice but to begin to punch him in the face. If he attempts to fight back I am then forced to smash his video camera. This may be a little hard to understand so check out the video below for a great example. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLK0TbVY6Ik<

Initial Investigation / Reports Suggest liveBooks Might be in Trouble

UPDATED: LIVEBOOKS ACQUIRED.
ORIGINAL STORY: While we don't like to lean heavily on rumors, our own investigations are pointing to some validity with regards to Vincent Laforet's recent article regarding liveBooks. liveBooks is one of the staples of the industry, providing seriously high end, powerful and great websites to photographers worldwide. However, Vincent's sleuthing (backed up by some emails I just sent to liveBooks) hints that all might not be well in the kingdom.
