Canon to Release the EOS RiP With Vertical 5:4 Sensor for Instagram Influencers

Canon to Release the EOS RiP With Vertical 5:4 Sensor for Instagram Influencers

Rumors are circulating that Canon is going to launch a version of the EOS RP with one killer feature when it comes to producing content for Instagram: a vertical sensor with a 5:4 ratio.

Until now, Instagram photographers have had to be content with the onerous task of turning their camera sideways and imagining bits chopped from the top and bottom or heavily cropping landscape images in post. This new camera is expected to be called the EOS RiP, and its portrait-orientation sensor will allow photographers to produce Instagram-ready content more efficiently.

"Social media content producers need validation," one Canon source is quoted as saying, "and we felt that traditional camera formats were creating a barrier. No longer will you have to cover parts of your camera's LCD screen with gaffer tape in order to enable your creative vision."

Files will be perfect for Instagram's 1,080 x 1,350 pixel format without the need for editing. While Instagram supports square and landscape images, portrait images generate better engagement, as they make best use of screen real estate on mobile devices.

The Canon EOS RiP Instagram bundle may save you more than $300 but it will still cost you your self respect.

If rumors prove correct, the RiP will be available as part of various "influencer bundles." As well as a spare LP-E17 battery and a blower brush, the entry-level kit will include a yellow anorak, a string of fairy lights, and ten thousand obviously fake followers.

The most expensive bundle will feature a wide-brimmed hat that must always be held to the head with one hand, a canoe that you don't know how to use, and a classic white Land Rover Defender that clearly belongs to someone else. Those with deep pockets will have the option to bolt on an Icelandic waterfall, although installation is not included.

The "RiP Elite Influencer" bundle.

This is not the first modified version of an existing camera that Canon has released. A few months ago, the Japanese manufacturer released the EOS Rg, a modified version of the EOS R developed specifically for those looking to photograph food. It incorporated an optical IR cut filter in front of the sensor for photographing gastronomical phenomena with utmost clarity.

Are you an Instagram content producer looking to optimize your workflow? Will you be looking to buy the EOS RiP? Be sure to leave your thoughts in the comments below.

Good joke, but I'm waiting for a square sensor sometime. Anyone ?

I am waiting for a golden ratio sensor! 😉

Seriously though, Ansel Adams loved the square format 6×6 cm, as the did not have to rotate the camera, but always envisioned how the was going to crop it, anyway.

The thing that would make the most sense would be a square sensor that covers the entire image circle that is projected by the lens. We should be able to capture the entire image that the lens produces, not just portion of it. To have to decide "vertical or horizontal?" before taking the picture is ridiculous. I know that a much larger, square sensor would "waste" the pixels on the corners, and cost a lot more to manufacture, and also require more processing power. But I couldn't care less about these things. I'm not really interested in a camera being efficient ... rather, I am interested in a camera that does more and gives us more composition options, even if it comes at a steep price.

How about a square sensor?

The BEST of April 1… early. Got so much right here!!! :D

Just give me one with the sensor in landscape orientation.

Early April's fools??

Is it April already?

No filters???surely canon won’t cripple this camera releasing it without any options for filters 🙂

Wow April came around fast... oh.

No, it didn't. It's 12 below 0 here! :-(

'Ya know, I kinda like the idea. I find myself shooting more and more portrait orientation nowadays, especially when I have on an 85mm. Vertical grip isn't really a solution for me since it defeats the purpose why I went mirrorless.

Haha, yes, I am aware the article is just a joke.

next canon camera will have a titled sensor dedicated to dutch angle framing , ;)

Is it April fool‘s already???

They could have waited just a couple more months to post this and it would have landed beautifully

I suspect that someone is taking the piss, but honestly , I would not be terribly shocked if this turned out to be legit.
The biggest problem I see with the concept is that all genuine Instagram influencers will want one for free .

1 April comes early....

It’s not even April 1st yet.

Should've saved this for April 1st lol

What drives me crazy is that the major camera manufacturers should really be using square sensors in their mirrorless cameras. A square sensor utilizes the full image circle from the lens and the EVF makes it really easy to select the aspect ratio you want. Having a programable button that allows you to quickly switch between your favorite aspect ratios or even just from horizontal to vertical would eliminate the need for a vertical grip and give users the flexibility in post to crop for different digital platforms (horizontal for your blog, 4:5 for your feed 9:16 for your stories, etc...) The hat bundle is clever but I would also make a 5 point cap an option as well.

Not really. 24x36 sensor has diagonal of 43.3 mm. If you fit a square in a same circle, sides will be 30.6 mm. So you will loose horizontal dimension. Not good if you want to do 3:2 or 16:9 ratio.Since you don't need any resolution to speak off for blog or Instagram 24mm height is just fine and some cameras like A7RIV allow you to have 4:3 or 1:1 aspect ratio already.

lulz. Pure comedy.

Finally!! I am not an influencer, but I can finally become one, thanks to this camera. Can't wait XD

I'm no engineer, so maybe I'm being completely obtuse here, but Canon seems to have squandered an opportunity to do something truly great. If they had created a camera that allowed the sensor to rotate inside the camera, that would provide the ergonomics of holding the camera horizontally and also allow people who rely on tripods to change sensor orientation quickly.

Will they ever just release a top of the line mirrorless camera?

All I really have to do is rotate my camera 90 degrees to the portrait position and done!!!

Now there's a compliment. 😊 🙏🏻

Edit: N/M I'm stoopit.

"Hold your camera like your phone, but as by magic, your videos are in the correct orientation!"

Best product of 2020.

You might just have given away a million dollar idea! Not gonna lie, you had me in the beginning. Such a camera would probably make more sense than most stuff that sells extremely well in some industries like gaming.

Is it April 1st already?

LOL! When film was a thing, before it DIED (thats right I said it!!), it was common to have a camera in 5:4. The bundles are the ticket for sure. There is so much value there.

This must be the dumbest thing yet by a brand. Does Canon have shares in Instagram? They must have which explains this ridiculous move.

The way you wrote that, it seems like you don't realize this is a big joke - a made-up camera with made-up specs to give us something to laugh about. Please don't tell me you thought this was real :)

Ah. Okay

They should whip every influencer to a really painful death. There is nothing I hate more than that group of people

.......... .......... .......... .......... .......... .......... ..........

I'm sorry you feel that way, Pieter.

Such hatred is often based on emotions and preconceptions, rather than on facts and logic. I hope that some day you learn to see others more objectively. I'm surprised that a fun, lighthearted little article brought out such anger from you.

Tom Reichner Sorry to hear that you took that seriously. Humour is sometimes difficult.

How have i never picked up on that. D:

KIA=Killed.IN.Action

Should have saved this till April 1st.

LOLOL

Gotta love FStoppers.

If they were gonna give the photoblogging industry an enema... FStoppers is where they’d stick the tube.

I can somewhat see the point.. but at the same time see how much you are limiting yourself by having the 5:4 sensor.

Having 16:9 or others allows me to move the 5:4 crop up and down in post to allow for more freedom and usually better images (as it's far easier to check those edges and crop in post.)

I'd be all for a 5:4 software-in-camera crop function, but to actually have the sensor 5:4 seems a bit weird.
