San Giovanni of the Dolomites

I've always wanted to photograph this church, but ironically I happened upon it by accident and didn't realize it was the same church I had drooled over from travel guides.

We had been photographing in Santa Magdalena, but because of the cloud coverage came away disappointed. The weather had turned wet and dreary, so we looked up a restaurant further in the hill town.

We passed the church on the way but didn't even notice it the first time, but thankfully we came to the same restaurant the following day and noticed the incredible setting. It had gotten very dark by then, so I hurried to get a closer shot before it would be difficult to traverse the maze of...ahem...mud patties.

We also met a photographer friend from Greece here, and just so happened to bump into him on our next 3 stops throughout northern Italy.

3-shot blended exposure.
