Airglow is a photochemical reaction that occurs high in the atmosphere, where atoms, molecules, and ions become excited by the ultraviolet radiation from the sun, and then release that energy in the form of visible light. Most of the visible airglow comes from oxygen atoms which glow green and is clearly visible from our Earth's orbit.
