Ed, I wonder if the area's storms haven't upset their migration, and they are so to speak in a fauna lay-over?

I actually looked that up this morning. The answer I found is that it is normal for them to be in NC in winter. They are drawn to bird feeders. They are short migrators. In this case, they were feeding off of the dead blossoms in my Crepe Myrtle tree. I heard all of the activity before I actually saw one. They are so small that I couldn't tell what they were until I saw one in the view finder.
