Pepper Yandell Shows Us How To Photograph Jets, Supercars, And Models

Pepper Yandell is a talented young photographer out of Texas who shoots some of the coolest cars in the world. He recently was given an awesome opportunity to photograph a couple of supercars in a hanger with really expensive jets - the kind of shoot car photographers dream about. Pepper was nice enough to share with me about how he put this shoot together.

According to Pepper:

Hey Fstoppers.com, this was always my dream shoot ever since I started shooting cars, a big white hangar with incredible private jets — mixing two of my greatest interests with both automotive and aviation subjects. Finally got around to making it a reality in one of the nicest private hangars in Dallas, TX with 3 incredible looking jets.

The client for this particular shoot is one I regularly shoot for, HRE Performance Wheels (https://www.facebook.com/HREperformancewheels). I have to thank Dallas Performance (https://www.facebook.com/DallasPerformance) and AutoSource Dallas (https://www.facebook.com/autosourcedallas) for providing the 1,400 horsepower Verde Ithica Lamborghini Gallardo and Starwood Motors (https://www.facebook.com/StarwoodMotors) for throwing me the keys to a flawless white Ferrari California. I brought along my stunning partner in crime, Misty Romano (https://www.facebook.com/MistyBeautiful), to help make everything look just a little bit better.

Going into this shoot I wanted go for a unique look not typically seen in these automotive hangar shoots, which is dark and dramatic. To achieve that I had my key grip, Dale Martin Photography (https://www.facebook.com/dalemartinphoto), keep the strobes quite close to the cars to hit very specific planes and angles of the car's body lines. I later combined all the exposures in post-production along with much adjustments of exposure and color to arrive at the dark moody concept in mind. This process is visible in the quick Photoshop time-lapses I included of a few of the shots.

Thanks to Greg Royar and Ryker Montgomery for shooting the video I finally found the time to edit together. Look forward to sharing more behind the scenes content of some incredibly productions I've got in the works!

A nice feature of a new up and coming photographer with some nice images. However, contrary to the title, he didn't show us anything or educate us in the slightest within that BTS video.

agree

Seemed to be a decent BTS. Looks like you're a somewhat bitter person in all your posts.

The placing of the vehicles, angle of shots, distance from cars, camera he used, use of strip box painting, photoshop editing…Jesus…bitter much? This is terrific. This gives you the concept that allows you to go out and at least try this type of thing.

I'm sorry this got this far. As I mentioned earlier, it's great to see new talent produce some great work at the end of a shoot. I have no issue with the content of the BTS or intro Pepper gave us, it was concise and humble. It was the wording of the title being misleading which I picked up on. BTS videos with Karl Taylor for example show you 'how to' do something, explaining and learning at the same pace of the video itself. I think this video was more of a 'Pepper Yandel shows us how he photographed...'. Just a somewhat misleading title for the content posted. Does this effect the content posted? Nope, not at all. The title just gave me a slightly different idea of what I expected to watch.

Not every BTS is a education BTS, its a plus to have some, but it is a BTS by definition. was done pretty well. Its not always about being educated. Sometimes its just nice enough to get a glimpse into how others work and some of the lighting and setup they use. You can fill in the blanks.

Not really a BTS shoot, as you just kinda get a glimpse into whats going on but no real detail of how and why. Nice images at the end and the cars are amazing! :D

Yet another article by one of the worst "writers" on fstoppers. You hardly ever post anything that's useful, instead you post other peoples shoots and not your own, Or your own ego driven editing contests. Just stick to bragging about yourself on social media.

I know Jacob. My apologies for being an ego driven asshole. That aside, I think you should do your homework. I've posted at least a dozen of my own shoots with extensive behind the scenes content, as well as a variety of equipment and software tests. That being said, excuse me, let me get back to bragging about myself on social media :D (this is a veiled attempt to get people to go back and read my old posts)

Jacob, take a deep breath. Nothing happened.
If you don't like what Douglas is posting - dont read his posts. We have 30+ writers, some write about things you find interesting, and some not. Personally attacking him for the interesting content he posts is just childish.

Some people are so full of hate, it's unbelievable.

In the video is bothered me that the white Ferrari didn't have HRE wheels but in the finals I see it's an advert for the dealership. The pictures look awesome, I think he did a killer job.

...and come folks. It's a BTS video not an educational DVD.

amen

the images where ok ... I say above average but not mind blowing like i thought it was going to be ... car photography is for top of the line photographers ... this was good but not great ... i feel i got fished in by the title ... i thought she was a real "super model" ....

Very Helpful to see this BTS video. I have my first automotive shoot coming up with a Lamborghini Gallardo and a Nissan R35 and trying to find as many tips as possible

I have a shoot coming up with a Lamborghini Gallardo and a Nissan R35, how does one go about getting access to locations like this?

thanks
