Ever Thought You Could Justify Spending $40,000 on A Camera?

Jakob Owens is a visual director based out of Los Angeles, California. He directs music videos, commercials, short films, and manages his YouTube channel TheBuffNerds. Ever since discovering Owens through YouTube, I have used his channel as a constant source of industry information and inspiration. In his newest video, he announces his recent acquisition of the 6K RED Dragon and while explaining the purchase he gives insight on how he justified this milestone purchase.

It’s very interesting seeing someone who is an industry leader in his craft going through and showing the path that led him to top end of the video equipment spectrum. Along with that he goes on to explain for who and for what situations it makes sense to own this sort of equipment. Even though it’s never spelled out in the video, I think it’s a way of showing the journey someone has taken to getting to a point where they finally take that next step in their creative career. It shows that someone can start out with a vision, a Canon T2i, and the right work ethic and work their way to the top and achieve those milestones that we dream about whether it be equipment, clientele, and or dream jobs.

As much as he describes that RED as a 'sexy camera', i will say (my opinion, of course) that it's one heck of an ugly camera.

I agree. I'm kinda over the whole "throw carbon fiber and red accents to make it look badass" trend.

Who cares what it looks like, lol...its about the images coming out of it.

Kind of curious, what car do you drive? Is it a nice vehicle, or is it a boxy utilitarian car? What about your significant other? Every person can be just as good as the other inside, never mind if they are unattractive on the outside... right? ;)

Jakobs work is amazing and I fully agree. I bought a RED ONE in 2009, cost me an arm and a leg but it helped me alot throughout the years.

For the right person, it's definitely the proper step.

absolutely, horses for courses. It depends what you're doing and what requirements you have for your gear.

You know I liked Mckinnon alot at first cause he was genuine about his story and the struggles of the industry. Now it just seems he's making videos about his youtube life and doing cool things. I mean more power too him and he's got a great audience but I don't find value in his channel anymore.
