For those of you may not know, we recently created a 20 hour photography tutorial with the incredible Joey Wright on all things swimsuit photography and retouching. We've been posting a weekly behind the scenes series of the creation of this tutorial. This is Episode 4.
In this episode we continue to film lessons during our 10 day stay in Curacao. Joey's first few lessons are all about using scrims. Scrims are basically stretched fabric with different levels of transparency that you can put in between your subject and the light source. A scrim can cut down on the light and soften the light, turning a small source, like the sun, into a large source of light. Throughout the tutorial Joey used a range scrims from different manufacturers to capture specific images.
The shot below was captured with harsh direct sunlight from above being softened by the Sunbounce Sun-Swatter. You'll notice that there are no hard shadows anywhere on Lisa.
During these lessons Joey became obsessed with getting into a coconut that we found on the ground. He worked for at least thirty minutes trying to get into this thing with tools we found in the kitchen and around the house. Eventually he was able to crack it open, and no, it wasn't that good.
Later we ended up finding this Youtube video.
The next day we moved on to reflectors. Joey's reflector of choice is the Westcott Scrim Jim 4x6' which can be used as a reflector or scrim depending on which fabric you use. Reflectors were used in each of the shots below.

We don't even have scorpions here and I still checked the floor under my desk after watching that.

I was stung by a scorpion in Cancun many years ago, hurts like a mother$(&T(*&! This videos are so fun, good job guys.
These BTS videos are so refreshing. Thanks guy!
Y'all didn't rent a chain saw to open coconuts?
There's another one great tip in the video: how to dip your lens into the sand while working with the knife on a coconut. Starts around 2:45 and the 3:00 it's just marvelous ;]
