Backlighting a subject at the beach solves a problem that trips up plenty of people shooting in bright sun: harsh shadows, squinting eyes, and a washed-out sky. Put the sun behind your subject, add your own light to the front, and the whole scene falls into place.
That method drives a beach shoot, walked through by John Gress, who positions the sun as a hair light and edge light while lighting her face from the front. He usually reaches for his Elinchrom Maxi White Reflector, a 40 cm or 16 in dish, but on this overcast day, he swaps in a 70 cm octabox to get softer light that matches the natural light filtering through clouds. Matching your artificial light to the quality of the ambient light keeps the final image from looking staged.
The formula starts with aperture, then shutter speed, then flash power. He picks his aperture first for depth of field, usually around f/2 or f/2.8 when shooting a single person. Next, he adjusts shutter speed until the background looks right, staying at ISO 100 unless he's shooting at dawn or dusk. Only then does he bring in the light and dial its power up or down until the subject is exposed correctly. On this shoot, he works between 1/6,400 and 1/8,000 of a second because the sky behind is so bright that blowing it out is a real risk, so he stops down slightly and pushes his shutter speed to hold detail in the highlights.
Those shutter speeds hint at a piece of gear doing quiet work in the background. Shooting flash at 1/8,000 of a second sits far beyond the normal sync speed of most cameras, which means Gress is relying on high-speed sync to freeze that fast shutter while still firing his strobe. High-speed sync costs flash power, since the strobe pulses across the shutter's travel rather than dumping all its light at once, which is part of why a heavy, well-controlled light source matters outdoors. Anyone learning to balance flash against a bright sky runs into the same wall, and the fix is almost always some combination of a faster shutter, a smaller aperture, and enough flash output to overcome the loss. Understanding that tradeoff turns beach and midday portraits from frustrating into predictable.
Gear and workflow get real attention here too. Gress tethers wirelessly to an iPad using the latest version of the Capture One mobile app and second-generation wireless tethering for the Canon EOS R5 Mark II. Updating to the latest firmware gets faster transfer speeds, and setting the camera's signal to 5 GHz instead of 2.4 GHz when the camera acts as the access point speeds things up further.
