Learn How to Mix Natural Light and Gelled Strobes to Create This Great Shot

One of the best tests of a photographer's lighting skill is their ability to use natural light and strobes together in an organic and convincing manner. This fantastic video tutorial will walk you through the method of using gelled strobes and natural light together to create this portrait along with the editing process in Capture One and Photoshop.

Coming to you from Michael Woloszynowicz, this excellent video will show you how he combined gelled strobes with natural light to create this portrait. This will give you a lot of great practice in several different techniques. First, gelling strobes is a chance to work with more creative color palettes and to develop your personal style. Second, whenever you mix natural and artificial light, it takes careful attention paid toward balancing the exposure. And third, mixing artificial and natural light takes some finesse to not look stilted or contrived. It is definitely an exercise worth trying both to expand your skill and your creative range (don't forget to try lots of different gel colors and find a color combination that works for your preferences and the environment), and Woloszynowicz' editing techniques are worth learning as well. Check out the video above for the full rundown.
