This photo is of a ritual religious dance called a cham performed at the Domkhar Lhundrup Choling Temple located in the Bumthang Valley of Central Bhutan during the Domhkar Festival. In this photograph the dancers, many of them Monks, appear to be suspended between this world and the spirit world of the deities which they have become as part of the ritual. Cham dances are a significant element of Vajrayana Buddhism, often referred to as Tibetan Buddhism.
Cham are high energy endeavors with each action and position of the body prescribed hundreds of years ago and having significant meaning. Just watching the Cham conveys merit and blessings upon the onlookers.
