2.5 - "Solid"

This was shot with an Olympus E3 on an early morning 2008 in a park in Vienna. I was already on my way back when I saw a few squirrels running around. I had a zoom lens with me that maxed out at an equivalent of 120mm full frame. I took a few snapshots, but no keeper in there, they were too far away and too quick. I kept walking until I noticed a single squirrel in the grass, which happened to notice me at the same moment. It was not close enough to get a good shot, but it apparently got curious about me and hesitated for an instant. I noticed that the only cover between us was a nearby tree a bit to the left of me. So I guessed it might go there to have a better and safer look. I quickly set the camera to burst drive mode and focused on the side of the tree hoping the squirrel would show up there, which it did a split second later. I got two shots of it. One being this one while the other one is the same with its motion blurred head turning around. This all happened in a few seconds and it was the closest I ever got to feeling and thinking like a “wildlife” photographer.

To clarify the luck part, the squirrel showed up more or less in the area that I had preframed. If it would have been quite a bit higher or lower or on the other side of the tree I would not have gotten anything.
This and that it actually went to the tree as I had guessed.
