About 25 years ago, a group of Greater rheas (Rhea americana) escaped from an animal enclosure near Lübeck, North Germany. It was generally assumed that they wouldn't survive harsh winter conditions.
The latest census (2024) showed a population size of around 70 animals while in the years before it was up to approx. 560 animals. These high numbers had caused massive complaints from local farmers since Greater rheas feed on field crops. Formerly a protected species in Germany, they can now be hunted legally.
This image shows a Greater rhea slowly making its way to its roosting site on a late winter afternoon.
