'REM Sleep Demon' is an image of tissue paper and plastic bags embedded in a sheet of ice and photographed in indirect natural light using intentional camera movement. Once the image was made, it was converted to monochrome. To achieve the effect of symmetry, the image was placed in Photoshop and a flipped copy of the image was blended with the original. The two images were blended together using the Overlay blending tool to obtain the image symmetry that takes on the appearance of a demon with big buggy eyes that is perched and about to leap out of one's dreams and into reality. A bit of adjustments of highlights and shadows along with sharpening completed the image. The challenge in making this type of photograph is getting the bulk of the image to be on one side of the frame with element features that will successfully mirror one another to create the illusion of bodily form. It took about 2 days and 500+ ICM images with constant rearrangement of scene elements to get this photograph to turn out the way I wanted it to appear. Sweet dreams!
