This photograph was taken in a remote place called Loongana in Tasmania. Some environmental scientists were looking for nesting hollows in some of the older and larger White Gums. In particular, they were hoping to find where some Masked Owls were nesting. This involved climbing some of the trees.
This photograph is a vertical panorama of a big tree known as Gough. Each component of the panorama included the climber, David, as he ascended - so it is a vertical panorama/multiple exposure - taken with a Pentax K-1ii, 50mm lens, f6.3, 1/125; camera handheld in a crouching position amongst the ferns; stitched together with PTGui.
But I can't tell whether all of it has uploaded correctly - you should be able to see at least 10 Davids in an image that is about 4:1 (H:W). A smaller jpg has been uploaded - the print version of this image was 110 Mb.
And the owls were not using Gough, but had previously nested in a nearby large tree named Fraser.
