I was helping a friend with a photoshoot for a post apocalyptic book he had written, where the pictures would be the chapter pages, each featuring a survivor character. I don't recall much about this character in particular, but nevertheless I remember the shoot clearly. We had our lovely mutual friend of ours don a gas mask and we were racking our heads around how we could make broad daylight at a playground seem otherworldly and torn. We kept searching different spots until we made our way back to some trees by a wall, they were casting these lovely spotted shadows all over the dirt and when I looked up the sun occasionally hit my eye. Thats when it all fell into place. With limited time on our hands we set up our talent on the ground while I stood above her on a longer focal length to really push the background out of focus and place emphasis on her face. We carefully positioned her face between spots of light until it was finally dialed in on her right eye. What a beautiful moment, filled with such sullen depth, a tiredness at a world torn to shreds, but still sharp and prepared for what's next. For such a simple set, it ended up being one of the biggest pay offs of the entire day.

Although the image of a post-apocalyptic scenario might be clear in your head, it does not show itself at all to the audience. What it looks like, is just a girl wearing a gas mask in crappy lighting. Basically, it's a snapshot.

Everything is so blurred, that I can't tell anything about the environment she's in. Her face and hair are clean, so how are we supposed to get the impression that the world has been torn to shreds??

A better option would have been to take her to a dilapidated building or an empty factory to create the setting. Then, style her outfit and makeup to match the environment. This is just a chick in a gas mask. I really don't understand how this became some sort of "beautiful moment."
