Canon Patents Two More Extreme Lenses

Canon Patents Two More Extreme Lenses

A theme of Canon's RF lens philosophy has been taking some standard, well-established designs and pushing them to new extremes, such as the 28-70mm f/2 zoom or replacing the 300mm f/2.8 prime with the new 100-300mm f/2.8L. It seems like they have no intention of slowing down, with more extreme patents now emerging.

Canon Rumors is reporting on two new patents for RF mount lenses, the RF 9-18mm f/4 and 10-18mm f/4. The EF 11-24mm f/4L USM generated a ton of excitement when it was first released, and while it can be exceedingly difficult to shoot at such wide focal lengths, I thoroughly enjoyed shooting with it. Extended the wide end out to 10mm or even 9mm would be jaw-dropping, and putting those capabilities in a zoom would make such a lens far more useful. All that being said, just because a patent is filed, it does not mean we will actually see that product hit the market, and there is no way Canon will release both a 9-18mm and 10-18mm lens, but it sure would be neat to see either of them appear and extend the legacy established by the 11-24mm f/4 even further. Hopefully, we will see more soon.

I'd like to see Canon upgrade their RF 24-240 zoom to a sharp ,weather-proofed, F4-6, L category lens with normal controls like a MF/AF switch on the lens. I know it would be more expensive and most likely heavier, but what a one solution lens!

TBH I was surprised just how sharp this lens actually is!

9mm rectilinear?

1: That's a $4000 lens in the eyes of Canon

2: That's -so wide- that I can't imagine shooting anything with it and it looking even remotely good. The perspective distortion would be so extreme, that it would just look like you're shooting -whatever- at warp speed. If 14mm isn't wide enough, I'd seriously consider your composition. What are you shooting? Pipe surveying?

I'm not one of those boomers who think every portrait or architecture shot or whatever should be shot with tilt/shifts or between 85 and 135mm, but 9mm on FF? Get outta here..

Get there earlier and closer than anybody else so they wont be in your foreground...

I wonder when they will get brave enough to make a 50 mm 1.4. I thought RF Mount was supposed to make all kinds of awesome lenses easier. What a crock.

(Obligatory rant, until they make it, sorry not sorry)

I wonder when they're going to make a successor for the 35mm...

Now we arw talking..I will ditch the EF system if Canon comes up with the rectilinear 9mm Zoom...the extreme angle enables me to get super close to my foreground and get there before anybody else..hah!
