Lately, it seems as if I am seeing a lot of photos where the model or subject is seen through a window, for example, the shot where the model sitting inside a coffee shop enjoying a cup of coffee while the photographer snaps a photo from outside. If you are having trouble finding a location to do that, here's a hack for you to recreate a similar look.
You don't need a giant window to create your image using reflection from shooting through glass, you can use something much smaller, something that you might already have. Coming from Jessica Kobeissi, she shares five different creative hacks using glass from a simple picture frame. You can find picture frames in all sorts of shapes and sizes, but if you are like me, you already have some in the house that are not being used.
Throughout the video, Kobeissi shares how the photos come out while hand-holding the piece of glass (be careful with sharp edges) between the camera and her subject to capture some headshots with reflections in the shot. These shots look very similar to the scenario I first mentioned. You could potentially set up any room and use the glass from the frame to mimic the window and shoot through the glass for that look. Now for the other creative hacks and to change it up, Kobeissi adds different elements to the sheet of glass to change the dynamics of the shot.
If you are not a fan of actually seeing where the glass is in the shot, I would suggest a large picture frame to obtain the sheet of glass from. You can buy a larger picture frame if you don't have one, or another option is to simply visit the local stores that sell sheets of glass. To help keep your hands or the model's hands from getting cuts, you could add foam strips on the edge or find picture frames with thinner frames.
The four different elements which Kobeissi applies to the surface aren't the other ones you can use. Dry erase markers work for adding color, or you can even tape gels to the glass. Think of lens hacks and lens filter hacks as well: you can apply Vaseline to the glass instead.
