Redwood Grove and Ferns, Northern California

My wife and I had rented a home on the North Coast of California for a couple of weeks. My wife went to be where her cell phone wouldn't ring and to enjoy the solitude of the forest. I had gone to be able to work along the coastal areas and in the huge forests, again seeking the solitude that can only be gotten in areas like this. I was attracted by the contrast of textures and the contrast of patterns which I think contributes to visual interest. There is something about the lure of black and white that just draws me to it; a sense of presence I think. Also it could be that for many years we had to decide whether we wanted to work in black and white, or in color since there was always the limitation of space in a backpack and how much weight I was willing to carry. I used a Toyo 45A camera with a 210mm Sironar-S lens. No filter and Kodak T-Max 100 film.
