White Cloud over Painted Hills, Oregon

65mm Sinaron · f/22 · ISO 50

Driving home from Montana after teaching workshop about film use. I thought I would drive down through John Day Fossil Beds, since I had never seen them. What I remember is that it was a very warm June afternoon with a bazillion bitey flies. I remember setting up and a bunch of very inconsiderate college age people interfering. Frustrating. An interesting thing about it was that the white cloud was reflecting light back down into the scene to give tonal separation on the little hills. The soil is a very dark shade of red and the sun was completely behind the hill to the right. I used a Toyo 45A camera, 65mm lens and #61 Dark Green filter. Kodak T-Max 100 film.

A very static/non-static photograph.

I am embarrassed to admit that while The Painted Hills/John Day Fossil Beds are only 200 miles away, I have never been there on my adventures around Oregon. What a shame!

Great photograph.
