Sentinel of the Rainforest

600mm · f/6.3 · 1/640 sec. · ISO 560

This environmental portrait of a bald eagle was taken during the Bering Sea Crab Fishermen's Tour out of Ketchikan, Alaska. Handheld at 600mm from the deck of the ship, the biggest challenge wasn't finding the eagle—it was finding a clear shooting lane through a full load of tourists enjoying the scenery, most with arms outstretched holding cell phones... often directly in front of me.

I included a tighter crop of this image in my annual calendar to emphasize the eagle itself, but for Fstoppers I wanted to share the broader scene. For me, this photograph is as much about the ancient coastal rainforest as it is the eagle, showing the wild landscape these iconic raptors have long called home.
