Aínsa at Dusk — Sobrarbe, Aragonese Pyrenees

The medieval walled quarter of Aínsa in Sobrarbe, Huesca, photographed by drone at dusk with Peña Montañesa — 2,341 metres — rising behind it. Aínsa was the capital of the County of Sobrarbe in the 11th century, when this valley marked the frontier between Christian kingdoms and Al-Andalus. The Romanesque bell tower of the Church of Santa María de Ainsa anchors the composition to the right of centre.

I flew at altitude specifically to show the full spatial relationship between the village and the massif — from ground level you can only have one or the other. The challenge was the fading light; the atmospheric haze on the mountains was thickening fast and I had maybe ten minutes before the detail in the upper range disappeared entirely. The wide valley between the village and the peaks — fields, forest, a ribbon of road — gives the scene its depth and stops it reading as a flat telephoto compression. The overcast edges of the sky kept the light diffuse enough to hold detail across the full tonal range from the shadowed foreground trees to the bright limestone face of Peña Montañesa.
