The Shadow Line

This portrait uses a narrow area of warm light to reveal selected details of a heavily tattooed man. His eye, facial features and sections of his chest emerge from deep shadow, while much of his body remains almost invisible. The off-centre composition leaves a large area of negative space, making the contrast between illumination and darkness the central visual element. Rather than showing every detail, the lighting creates a portrait built around presence, texture and controlled concealment.
