Dear Sony, why is it so difficult for you to get the flip-out screen right? It's as though you're trying to do absolutely everything you can with your screen except give us what we've been asking for. How many times do we have to ask you Sony? Almost everyone asked for the flip-out touch screen, instead, you gave us a completely useless flip-up screen.
Apparently, the Sony a6400 is a camera designed predominantly for YouTubers and vloggers. Clearly, Sony hasn't thought this one through or they think that vloggers don't need microphones. Just so that it's extremely clear, flip-up screens suck. I mean how are you supposed to use the flip-up screen when you have something like a shotgun mic connected to the hot shoe? This is why Canon is number one, they just get the basics right. Most people who vlog with their cameras tend to use a microphone because almost all cameras are terrible for recording audio. The dumbest thing about this is that Sony also markets their shotgun mic with the a6400. Seriously, you can't make this stuff up.
I can already imagine what Sony's excuse is going to be. More than likely they're going to say something like, "Well, we saw how people were attaching monitors to their hot shoe and thought oh, that's what people want".
Sony, please, enough with the excuses and feigning ignorance. You know what customers have been requesting for what seems like an eternity. Please, for the love of God, give us a flip out screen. Not a tilt screen. or a weird vertical screen and definitely not a flip-up screen. An actual proper flip out touch screen. Just in case there's any confusion, take look at the image below of a camera from a company that gets it right.
No matter what Canon get's wrong they always seem to get the very basics right. This is one of the reasons why Canon continues to dominate the industry. Recent data suggest that Canon is now the number one manufacturer for both DSLR cameras and mirrorless in Japan; that didn't take long did it?
What annoys me the most about the choices Sony makes for their screens is the fact that they're the one company that shouldn't be getting this wrong. I mean, It's Sony, you know, the company that makes stuff with high-quality screens like TVs and smartphones. Even without considering the flip-out issue, the screens they have in their cameras are terrible. How is Sony the company to not get this right?
My guess is that Sony will probably disappoint with their potentially upcoming cameras like the a7S III and the a7000. These cameras are not going to have flip-out touch screens, because Sony just wants to be awkward.
Ok, I'm done with my little rant now; what are your thoughts on Sony and why do you think they refuse to offer a proper flip-out touch screen in their cameras?
Do we need a flippy screen?
For video yes. Sony make video specific cameras too. We’re not talking about photographers here.
Right from the beginning Sony has marketed the a9 for example as a stills camera
that happens to include stunning 4k video capabilities. Most of the ads I have seen focus on their incredible a9/a7-series stills image capabilities. You are looking at the wrong tool for the job Usman. If you want flip out screen go GH5 like Mark Weins. he's not whining he's producing. here is an a9 ad from way back:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HF2GOmsOr40&feature=youtu.be
I never discussed the a9. What are you talking about??
Are you suggesting the a7s series of cameras is marketed more towards photographers? I discussed Sonys video-centric came. What kind of nonsense arguments are you making here?
Sony makes both photography specific cameras and video specific ones. Just cause one has a similar feature when compared to another doesn't mean each is for the same type of creative.
https://youtu.be/M4obW6FfTt0
Ok here is the a7iii ad. It focuses on primarily still photos. Unless your rant is about how you are still pissed at the 3+ year a7s2 not having flip out screen. Life is short and one shouldn’t be pissed at something they can’t change for 3+ years. Do u want to utilize a very important feature now or wait and rant till Sony Releases one at some uncertain date.
I Literally didn’t say anything about the a7 III lol hahah. Where are you getting this from hahah.
Also the heck you doing commenting here man you should be working on my Gofund me campaign.
well it definitely isn't flip screen on a7assiii or a7000 as you have already looked at your krystal meth ball and it says "don't count on it":
"My guess is that Sony will probably disappoint with their potentially upcoming cameras like the a7S III and the a7000. These cameras are not going to have flip-out touch screens, because Sony just wants to be awkward."
so what camera were you really talking about bait click dawood? a6401.2?
Dear god... the lack of logic in your comments is incredible lol. Please refer to the gif in the article, I think it articulates your comments better than I can in any comment.
I write an article about how Sony should offer a flip screen for their video-specific cameras. You start talking about how photographers don't need them and mention a few photography specific cameras. I then say this is more about their video specific cameras and then you turn around say oh well Sony don't have them in their video specific cameras anyway. That's precisely why I wrote this article haha.
Come on Yin, are you paying attention to your own comments?
I am enjoying this back and forth though and once again, where is my Gofund me campaign I'm very serious about you starting one I don't think you're showing enough commitment to back up your statements.
Which Sony video-specific cameras do you speak of? If you actually read(and write less) you will see that is exactly what I am trying to determine through the process of elimination. So please enlighten us which "video-specific" Sony body you are whining about. You post a photo of the "gold-standard" flip screen on the Canon body.... then post a photo of the a6400...then another body..... you are sending mixed messages....
i think we should instead start a gofund me for you to take a writing class.
"If you actually read(and write less)" Literally what you need to do lol. The reason you're not getting it is because as you said yourself you didn't read the article properly. So now all you're getting all confused and making really irrelevant points and asking me to clarify.
Read the article first and then maybe you'll get it.
Ok great again I'm going to hold you to it. I want you to go and start two Gofund me campaigns for me. Don't let me down now. Put your money where your mouth is lol.
I went back and read it and it is another two wasted two minutes i will never get back. Rest of the article is just as pointless as the beginning.
Perhaps you can follow up this gem with ""Why Can't X-Rite Just Give Us a Flip-Out ColorChecker?"
No thanks. I have an a6500 and an a6000 and am considering replacing the a6000 with the a6400. I flip out screen would be a deal breaker for me. Thankfully Sony is not listening to you. They have made lots of improvements that don't entail making it a different type of camera. There are plenty of cameras with flip-out screens go buy one of them rather than insisting that Sony changes their cameras away from my needs.
Do you shoot video?
Why do you think people love the GH5?
Don’t make video centric cameras and they pretty much need a flip out screen. This isnt about your needs if you’re just a photographer.
It's not a video-centric camera. It's a camera with some video capability. And yes the a6000 does viable 1080 and the a6500 does 4k that is fine for non-professional use but I would warrant that the greater percentage of people who buy into the Sony APS-C cameras are not that centred on the video capabilities. Having said that quite a few people (including the DPReview film review guy) use the a6300 as a B Camera despite the lack of flip-out—and more importantly the rolling shutter jello. The fact is that set on a tripod and used sensibly these are not major issues. I doubt many buy into the a6x00 series as run and gun cameras. And yes it is about my needs just as much as your position is about your needs. As I said a flip-out screen would be a deal breaker for me as it would also be for street photographers and other uses. If you don't like the format go to a different brand, we are spoilt for choices. But as one of the best selling mirrorless APS-C cameras I think it is pretty clear that Sony is servicing its user base. The a6000—despite being 5 years old is still a big seller so obviously not having a flip-out screen is only affecting a (vocal) minority
This specific camera is more geared towards video. You can say it's not but it is.
Not according to Sony or their press release. You might think that it would be a good video camera if only they made a few changes (like the flip-out screen) but their press release focuses mainly on AF improvements. So yes I can say it is definitely not being marketed as a video-centric device.
They literally market it with a microphone.
They don't! What they do say is :" there is also an optional XLR adapter (available separately) to facilitate the use of pro-level microphones to give you better audio quality." So while I agree that they have improved the video capabilities (especially fixing overheating and time limits) they are marketing this camera as a general mid-range camera. This is being marketed by Sony as a replacement for the a6300 and not as a new model pitched at the video market.
ludwig please stop feeding the troll with your sensible comments. the only way this ends is if sony personally makes a one-off golden prototype of aXXXX with golden flip-out screen for usman with theserial # UD001
How do flip out screens interact with L-brackets? I like to angle my screen up a bit when shooting landscapes and it looks like an L-bracket would get in the way of a flip out screen.
Probably not well, but this was a discussion about Sony's more video-centric cameras. I don't think Sony should adopt a flip out screen on all of their cameras just ones they aim more towards video.
On another forum talking about another camera with the same screen design, it was pointed out that this design is more discreet when shooting "from the hip." Makes sense when you don't want to call attention to yourself. The screen remains behind the camera body when facing up and is less likely to be noticed by people not paying much attention to you. The flip-out screen sticks out to the side of the body before rotating up making the camera appear larger and calls attention to your use of the screen.
Sure, for photography. This was more of a discussion about Sony and how they aim certain cameras for video users. They are targeting youtubers and vloggers with this camera too.
It's not about patents. It's about religion. Some companies are absolutely convinced that flippy (aka, fully articulated) screens are the right answer. Others are absolutely convinced that tilt screens are the right answer.
I suggest that you can pretty much tell by the level of convolution. Flippy screens are all pretty much the same. You can filp them around for a vlogger's view, you can fold them back against the camera to use it in P&S mode, you can fold the screen back against the camera to protect and vanish it.
Tilt screens used to just tilt up and down. Then it was pointed out that some people want to see the screen from the front of the camera, and so a few figured out how to tilt over-the-top or under-the-bottom, even though those conflict with shoe-mounted accessories or tripods.
And then some other comedian pointed out that sometimes you want to hold a camera vertically. So we got really nutty two-way tilt on some cameras. And finally, just around now, someone pointed out that it's useful to be able to fold away the screen against the camera, so there's the new Fujifilm X-Pro3 fold-down screen. It just folds down... no front view, no portrait mode view.
Or just put in a flippy screen. But as I said, it's kind of a religion.
