Final Shoot

I have been in the process of moving out of my the studio that I have used for the past 8 years. It is a brilliant and frustrating space in a historic factory building just outside of New York City. The change is forced on me, but I'm not resisting because it was time for the change. In this case the overall building is taking the whole floor (approx. 12,000 sq ft) to rent to a single tenant and my relatively small (3000 sq ft) will be taken apart.

I took this as an opportunity to make an interesting final shoot after most things were moved out. This image from that shoot with fashion model Anastasia in a bridal gown left over from a designer bridal client shoot. I wanted to emphasize the texture and geometry created by the horizontal and vertical lines of the steam pipes and the diagonal lines from the direct window light.

It took some careful model direction to make sure that her face was pleasingly lit by the natural sunlight and not obscured by the shadows from the window mullions. I was less worried about where the rest of the shadow lines fell on the gown.

I took the opportunity to work with a new accessory to bring in some vintage feel. I had recently purchased a lens adaptor that allowed me to use my Hasselblad 80mm CF lens on my Nikon D850 camera. It definitely slows down the process as the CF lens was never built for speed, but the detail and highlights are at the top level. Next I'll have to try the other adaptor I acquired to use my Pentax 6x7 165mm lens on my Nikons.

While I will miss aspects of my studio, it came with a lot of strings and obstacles. I am looking at it as a burden lifted because I had already taken innumerable satisfying photos there.
