How to Add More Moodiness to a Photo Using Photoshop's Darken Blend Mode

Blending modes are some of the most useful functions in Photoshop, and yet, they are often overlooked, which is a shame, because they offer a ton of power and versatility for dialing in the exact edits you want, whether subtle and understated or an entire overhaul of an image. One of the most useful blending modes is the darken mode, and this excellent video tutorial will show you how to use it to add a bit of mood to an image.

Coming to you from Matthew Anderson, this great video tutorial will show you how to use Photoshop's darken blending mode to add a bit of mood to an image. The darken blend mode is one of the simpler in the program: it compares the two layers pixel by pixel and shows whichever layer has a lower luminance value at each pixel (note that is does not actually blend the pixels). As you will see, this is a fantastic way to add just a subtle touch of mood to an image without it becoming overly dramatic or obvious. If you have not explored Photoshop's blending modes before, I highly recommend giving them a try; they will unlock a lot of potential in your image edits. Check out the video above for the full rundown from Anderson.
