One of the Most Useful Features in Photoshop

Photoshop is a tremendously complex and multilayered program, and as such, it can be easy to overlook some of its less obvious features. Blend if is one such feature, but despite its somewhat hidden location, it is one of the most of useful tools at your disposal. This fantastic video tutorial will show you everything you need to know about Blend if, including how it works and some of its most useful applications.

Coming to you from Unmesh Dinda of PiXimperfect, this awesome video tutorial will show you the ins and outs of using Blend if in Photoshop. Blend if is not featured as prominently as some other features, The concept behind it is pretty straightforward: Photoshop will blend two layers based on their relative luminosity values between them (or based on individual channel information). You can then control the transition via the feathering adjustment. This allows you to very quickly blend effects into just the highlights, the shadows, or more. The best part is that because it is a global adjustment based on luminosity, you do not need to worry about masking, increasing the efficiency of the adjustment. Nonetheless, you can always combine them with a mask should you need more control. It is a feature every photographer should know how to use. Check out the video above for the full rundown from Dinda.

Every time I start to think I have a pretty good handle on Photoshop Unmesh reminds me that the reality is otherwise...

It's ridiculous how knowledgeable he is.
