You shoot a conference in a dim ballroom, your shutter speed drops too low, and every frame comes back with a little motion blur. The fix costs real money, and the choice between a faster lens and a better camera body decides how you spend it.
That exact dilemma lands in front of David Bergman from a viewer named Gary, who shoots lectures and events with a Canon EOS R5 Mark II and the f/2.8 RF zooms, and wonders whether primes like the Canon RF 35mm f/1.4 beat upgrading to the Canon EOS R1. Bergman starts with what a fast lens actually gives you. A wider aperture lets more light hit the sensor, which lets you raise your shutter speed while keeping a good exposure. Moving from f/2.8 to f/1.8 buys one and a third stops, and f/1.4 buys two full stops, turning a shaky 1/60 into a clean 1/250 with the same light on the sensor. Primes can open that wide because they only have to be sharp at one focal length, while a zoom juggles a range and can't push past f/2.8 in most cases.
The other path raises ISO, and Bergman explains what that costs. Amplifying the signal also amplifies the noise underneath it, showing up as speckled grain in the shadows. A flagship body like the R1 uses a newer sensor and stronger processor to handle that amplification more cleanly. By his eye, the R1 gives roughly one stop more usable ISO than the R5 Mark II, and he happily pushes it to 12,800 when he has to, though he calls that a working estimate rather than a lab measurement. He's clear that he's speaking about Canon gear because he's a Canon Explorer of Light, and the same logic maps onto any brand.
The tradeoff nobody thinks about until they see the files is depth of field. At f/1.4, your plane of focus can go paper thin, and everything in front of and behind it melts into blur. That look separates a subject from a busy background, but at a lecture you might want the slide behind the speaker to stay readable, and a shallow aperture works against you there. Bergman also weighs price honestly. A single prime often costs less than a pro zoom, but covering the same range means buying several of them, and the R1 runs about 50 percent more than the R5 Mark II.
There's a piece here worth applying beyond this one question, and it's the buffer that a second body creates. When you upgrade the camera instead of the glass, the old body doesn't vanish. For paid work, running two bodies lets you keep different focal lengths mounted and ready, so you switch between a wide and a tele without swapping lenses in the middle of a moment. It also gives you a backup if your primary fails mid-event, which is the kind of thing that ends a shoot when it happens and you have nothing else in the bag. That reasoning tracks with how most working event and wedding shooters build a kit over time. They rarely replace one body with another. They stack a newer body on top and demote the older one to second string, which spreads the cost and doubles the redundancy at the same time.
Bergman's own recommendation for Gary flips the assumption that a new camera is the answer. The R5 Mark II already handles low light well, so jumping to the R1 for noise alone won't show a dramatic difference, especially with current noise reduction software doing the heavy lifting. Instead, he'd start with a single prime in the focal length that gives the most trouble, and he'd lean toward a longer one like an 85mm over a 35mm, since motion blur reads more obviously in a tight shot than a wide one. Adding one fast lens to a solid set of zooms means you still cover the whole event and pull out the bright glass only when the room forces you to.

After 25 years of shooting corporate events professionally, I've concluded that the correct answer is "neither" - let ISO drift up to 25,600 and apply DxO's DeepPRIME 3 noise reduction. I can even go ISO 51,200 in a pinch. That said, I also use f1.4 and f1.8 primes.
