This photo was made in 1999 using a Kodak DCS 520, which was a Fankensteinian thing based on a Canon Eos 1n. It was 2MP and apparently cost $20,000.
It was supplied to me by my employer at the time producing the America's Cup website. The shot was part of the first shoot I did with the camera and was a revelation for me at the time. I visualised this shot and lay on the deck under the sailors operating the "Coffee Grinder" which is a gearbox connected to the winches on the yacht. I fired off about eight or ten frames and then checked them on the screen. This one frame worked out. Hand placement and amount of motion blur I was happy. If I had been shooting with film I could have blown roll after roll. Not known I had what I wanted till hours later and if I hadn't it was too late and too bad. It's funny looking back on that time. Took ages to get out of the habit of shading the camera when changing cards. ha ha ha.
