This photo was taken in 2002 in Bryce Canyon in Utah. The camera was my first digital SLR - the Nikon D1. All of 2.47 megapixels! This was one of my favorite images of that trip. Since taking it, I have gone back to the image several times to re-edit. This is probably my best edit, done in Photoshop with several adjustment layers. The trip exposed a couple of technical limitations of the camera. First was not unusual - battery life in the cold. I hadn't planned well enough for April in the high desert. This morning was around 20 degrees F. I was constantly swapping batteries to keep shooting. Late in the trip I discovered dust on the sensor, that was new to digital! The strangest issue was at the highest part of Bryce Canyon - which is over 10,000 feet above sea level. The camera just locked up and wouldn't take photos. Turned out there was a known issue with the IBM Microdrive I was using for storage had problems with the oils freezing up over 9000 feet. To say the least, the entire trip and experience was one that sticks in my mind. FYI - my wife was pregnant with our first on this trip and we gave him the middle name Bryce. :)
