Statue of Liberty and the Full Moon.

Full moon scheduled to set at 4:57am. Nikon D800/800mm mirror lens with 2x converter.
Tripod exposure: 1/6 sec @f8_400 iso / shutter release cord w/ mirror lockup.

I planned this image using the app TPE. The app is especially designed for photographers working with natural light. If you're shooting landscape, wildlife, architecture, real estate, weddings, or natural light portraits, Photo Ephemeris will tell you everything you need to know about sunlight, moonlight, and starlight.

I love to capture the phases of the moon in conjunction with an interesting foreground subject. Capturing the moon at night can be a little tricky because you have to nail 2 exposures and make them one because the foreground and the background carry different values and you don't want to blow out your highlights or muddy up the shadows.

I find it's best to use a tripod as you can study your composition and make adjustments on the fly if necessary.

But on this night, I was lucky enough to catch the entire moon setting behind the Statue before it eclipse the horizon line. Most times as you are waiting for the setting moon prior weather forecast claims clear skies but be aware as soon as the moon lowers itself into the earth's atmosphere one may experience great disappointment as the moon seems to disappear behind those pesky clouds.

But not on this day, for mother nature was kind...
