The assignment was "Water Portrait" so I googled it and got some results with people looking through a glass of water. I decided to give it a try as a self-portrait. So I experimented with different vases and glasses. I seem to remember it's the shape of the vase that makes it look how it does, not just the water. I was also trying to use my cell phone connected to my camera to click the shutter and focus. It was hard to see what I was doing because my Rebel T6 doesn't turn off Exposure Simulation, so I could only see the frame on my phone for a few seconds while the camera focused. Also, I didn't have an adjustable table, so I had to lean down. The class loved this picture. I think it's embarrassing, but it always makes me laugh!
Looking again at the settings, I must have stopped using the strobe and just used the modeling light, so I could better see what I was doing.

this is brilliant!
I can't take any credit for the idea, but thank you!
I love the story behind this. I think that the table not being adjustable really lent itself to this picture. Seeing your shoulders slumped forward adds to the feeling of "defeat" that your face is telling. The hair over your face giving that "disheveled" look. The distorted eye. Really well done!
F8 was an interesting choice! Glad you managed to stay still that long! That's hard, especially while operating the phone to get the photo as well!
I remember being so tired and frustrated after that shoot. I think I got a haircut, too. :) Thanks for the cool feedback!
I love how dramatic this came out... Show how water can distort the direction of light.
Yes, I think the vase shape did it too, it was slightly convex. I tried using a concave vase and it was a different effect.
Your choice for a convex was great... Do you have the other image with the concave vase? Would love to see it
I found one that's decent, the eye looks kind of interesting, too - because overall they didn't turn out very well. I was using a mannequin to try test out the water and vases. I'll add it to my photos. I'll also add a contact sheet for this photo. :) thanks!
Great! Looking forward to it👍🏽
