Photographer Swears This Is the Last Lens He Is Buying, Promise

Lincoln, KS: A local man who recently purchased his 28th lens swears this is the last lens he is buying. Really. He promises.

The photographer, Nate Thatcher, purchased the $4,500 Zeiss Otus 85mm f/1.4, bringing his total collection to 28 lenses, including 4 copies of the same 50mm lens ("each has a slightly different character") and a 400mm f/2.8 ("in case I ever decide to get into sports"). Thatcher's wife, Nadine, was a bit surprised and perturbed by the purchase, noting:

He told me it was 'the ultimate portrait lens' and kept waving an 'MTF' or 'WTF' chart at me and talking about bokeh. I mean, I guess that's great and all, but I've never even seen him take a picture with a human in it. In fact, when we asked him to do a group portrait at the last family reunion, he said he doesn't break out the camera if it isn't 'golden hour on a mountain.' We live in Kansas.

Thatcher's daughter, Lindsay, notes she's a bit worried about her dad:

He literally spends four hours a day in his shop cleaning them. Last week, we were having a dinner party, and mom asked him to bring in the good glassware for the guests, and he came back with a 200mm lens.

Thatcher claims that his family, who are not photographers, just don't understand, pointing to a group of photography friends on the Internet who support his decision:

I saw this portrait I really liked on Facebook, so I asked the photographer what lens she was using. She said the Zeiss 85mm, so obviously, I had to buy that lens so I could shoot portraits like her. I mean, yeah, I didn't shoot portraits before this, but that's because I didn't own this lens. Everyone in this Facebook group says it's the best.

Unfortunately, Thatcher's wife doesn't believe he's done:

I try to support his hobby, but I'm a little worried it's turning into an obsession. He swore this was his last lens, but isn't 28 a bit much? I mean, the owner of the local camera store sends us a personal holiday card and a bottle of wine every year. I still tried to be supportive when he purchased this. I know he cares a lot about autofocus performance, so I asked him what he thought of it with this lens. He started to answer, then he got really quiet, fiddled with the lens for five minutes, then grumbled under his breath and walked out of the room. I didn't think much of it, but I checked our browser history tonight, and the first entry was a Google search for 'world's best 85mm lens bokeh sharp must be autofocus'. We can't afford a 29th lens!

Fstoppers will keep you updated on Thatcher's purchases.

LMAO

LOL!!!!! That guy needs to take a Gas-X and comeback to reality. That's the worst case of GAS I've ever heard!

Does he understand that someday all those lenses will belong to someone else?

or 1/2 of them when his wife gets fed up and divorces him.

yeap, sold on ebay for less than a $100 each

He doesn't quite get that brains and vision make photographs. The camera and lens are simply tools. Good tools help, but if you never use them, they're worthless.

Well, my wife let me buy a used Canon New F-1 with the AE Finder FN and AE Motor Drive FN. She asked "That's their flagship camera?" I answered "Yes, for the 80's." and she said "Buy it." That same year (2013), she bought me a Canon 5D III; she was going to buy the package from Amazon, but I found a similar package (minus the cheap tripod) from B&H for $500 less.

I give this article 5 stars for the title alone. Excellent.

I'm not sure everyone in the comments realizes this is clearly satire, which is maybe the funniest part of all this

Seriously wtf. I weep for humanity.

I'm afraid a lot of people doesn't get it which is kinda sad. Either that or the tries to keep the joke alive is reaally bad.

I have 6 and I think that's excessive

70% of those commenting are either really committed to keeping this bit going or just don't understand satire.

I enjoyed the article, the comment section remains a concern.

Lincoln, KS is tiny and in the middle of nowhere. I'd be willing to bet that he owns at least 50% of the DSLR lenses in the area.

Maybe he should go to one of those shops that sells old military gear, and buy a World War 1 a GAS-mask?

Better yet he's switching to SONY....

hmmm I feel like most of the commenters should check this out http://bfy.tw/Spd

« 'MTF' or 'WTF' chart » … ;)
Thx for the grin

Guys, c'mon seriously...this is satire. The amount of people that think this is real is quite worrying!

And you wonder why Trump is president...

This is so funny. Most of us suffer from Gear Acquisition Syndrome. However, I found out some time ago that buying better and more expensive stuff doesn't equal to getting better pictures. That also stopped me from buying a FF camera with even more expensive and heavy lenses.

On the flipside, my newest camera (Sony a6300( broke down before the holiday and I had to take a 5 years old camera (Sony a77) and especially in low light the pictures weren't that good with the older camera. It is not that the a6300 is noisefree but the noise is far better looking. So gear sometimes helps, but talent and dedication are probably more important.

My strategy: Step 1 - Get divorced. Step 2 - Get serious about photography.

Well, I am up to 9 now...split between cropped and full frame. Not TOO bad, :-)

Oh that was glorious! I laughed all the way through!
