A Cowboy and Dust

The rhythmic stamping of horse hooves and the scurrying of calves kick up dust from the rain-starved land of Western Idaho as the sun peaks through the smoke-chocked skies of yet another plagued summer.

I was on assignment in an incredibly rural ranch (over an hour of dirt roads on BLM land) documenting cowboys during a routine cattle gathering. The sky diffused the rising sun, but it was just strong and directional enough to illuminate the dust which gave so much life to the scene.

I shot this with a Nikon Z7 and, since I wanted to get close to the action and bring the viewer into the scene, a 14-30 lens. Processed in LR, PS and Exposure 7 for the black and white adjustment.
