Fstoppers Top 10 End of the Year Buys

Fstoppers Top 10 End of the Year Buys

As the year comes to a close, I can't help but think tax season is just around the corner. Taxes are surely my least favorite things to do, even worse than a root canal in my book. We cannot avoid giving money to our loving & watchful government, but we can make some last minute buys to invest in our business before forking over the remainder. Here are my top 10 "buy it before the government takes its chunk" purchases. Spoiler, #1 is a nice trip to a tropical location.

18 Unbelievable Images of Snowflakes

I remember in middle school when our science teacher showed us images of snowflakes and being blown away. They really do contain a little bit of magic in each flake. Russian photographer Alexey Klijatov has been capturing images of snowflakes on his balcony with his hacked together point and shoot. Check out his setup and simply beautiful images.

How to Kick Back and Completely Edit your Photos in Lightroom with an Xbox Controller

How to Kick Back and Completely Edit your Photos in Lightroom with an Xbox Controller

I am always on the search for how to make my editing more productive, because honestly, it isn't my favorite part of being a photographer. We have posted in the past about culling your images using a game-pad. However by adding VSCO Keys to your workflow you can map almost any Lightroom slider on your remote. I have included program links and configuration files for an easy setup with an Xbox Remote.

NYC's Largest Rail Project in a Century

NYC's Largest Rail Project in a Century

Living in NYC is great, but it has its down falls. As the city continues to grow we rely on an outdated transportation system. Luckily the MTA is digging away at the largest rail project the city has seen in sometime, East Side Access Project. Once completed the MTA will have added 5.6 miles to the rail system. Check out the latest underground photos from the project.

MagMod - Magnetic Speedlite Modifiers

MagMod - Magnetic Speedlite Modifiers

I rarely use gels or modifiers on my speedlites because I am lazy and in a hurry on wedding days. I just fix the color issues in post. However today I was notified that a new product was posted on Kickstarter. Meet the MagMod, a simple magnetic band that mounts to your flash allowing modifiers to be slapped on and off. Check it out, I just backed the project myself.

19 Images of Home Made Halloween Costumes

19 Images of Home Made Halloween Costumes

Need a costume for Halloween but don't think you can knock one out of the park DIY style? Ossain Brown created a collection of terrifying vintage photographs of costumes of the past. These costumes are mostly homemade and have a back woods horror more spine tingling than the Deliverance banjo. Honestly, what are nightmares made of if not a child in a burlap sack mask...Warning: images not for the feint of heart.

Star Trek Past and Present

Star Trek Past and Present

Reddit user, ThatNodicGuy, recently created images of present Star Trek (Into Darkness) actors overlayed on the actors from the past movies and the results are amazing. Most of the actor's features and facial structure line up perfectly with their past counterparts. I find it rather cool that the casting team did such a good job making sure the new cast still resembled the old. The Ultimate Guide to the Brenizer Method

The Ultimate Guide to the Brenizer Method

We have posted several articles regarding the Brenizer Method (here and here) in the past, but none from the man himself, Ryan Brenizer. Ryan is easily one of the top wedding photographers in the nation. He shoots over 60 weddings a year and probably only sleeps 3 hours a day. He is offering a full guide on how he shoots his method from the first photo through post production. When the method is done correctly your image could have the depth of field of a f/.04 lens.

What I Have Learned Searching for a Wedding Photographer

What I Have Learned Searching for a Wedding Photographer

I recently got engaged and have started the process of finding my wedding photographer. Something that has become very hard since I have decided to rule out the possibility of a friend shooting it, because let's face it, they need to be drinking. As a wedding photographer myself, I noticed some positives and negatives in other businesses first impressions. These are just things that have become my pet peeves while seeking a photographer, mostly website related.

Pye booked an engagement session where the couple were both into track racing and had very nice cars. They decided to incorporate the couple's hobby with their shoot. StandBagger Original Rollup Review

StandBagger Original Rollup Review

Living in NYC and having to drag gear around I have become very particular about my camera and gear bags. Comfort, size, weight, and protection are the deciding factors, then I worry if I look cool or not (you can’t go wrong with a black bag). I started looking for a small light stand case that would fit nano stands, a small umbrella and a monopod. This is usually what I use for reception lighting at weddings. After searching through all of the camera stores online, I finally stumbled across the StandBagger.

The Image Fulgurator by Julius von Bismarck Copied?

The Image Fulgurator by Julius von Bismarck Copied?

Earlier today I posted about a new product on the market, the Flash Blaster. I was quickly notified by our reader Ryan Dunn that this device looks and acts much like Julius von Bismarck's Image Fulgurator. I quickly did some searching to find out if this was true and stumbled across Julius' website and an interview he did back in 2008 with Wired. Where he is quoted saying he applied for a patent on this device... Do you think they simply copied his device?
