Why Does My GoPro Take Better Video Than My Professional Nikon DSLR?

Still cameras have gotten so good that professionals are now starting to purchase smaller camera systems rather than the high megapixel monsters that have owned the market for years. We may have reached the edge of diminishing returns when it comes to standard still cameras and their functions but we have only scratched the surface when it comes to video.

Dammit Windows, You're Making It Hard To Fight The Apple Fanboys

I am a professional photographer/videographer and I use Windows computers. I don't LOVE Windows, I just know that Mac OS drives me crazy. I hate all of the "syncing" and hand holding that Macs have. Windows disappears into the background and allows me to use applications in peace. Some days, like today, it's hard to justify this decision.

Photographing The World BTS ep 2, Fstoppers Continues Filming In Iceland

If you haven't already heard, Fstoppers has teamed up with Elia Locardi to produce Photographing The World: Landscape Photography and Post-Processing. For the entire 2 months of filming this tutorial we filmed hours of behind the scenes footage every single day and we ended up editing it down to 8, 15 minute episodes.

The Rhino Slider Evo Is the Best Slider We Have Ever Tested

A few months ago I got an email from Rhino Camera Gear asking if I would like to beta test their new slider. I didn't really know anything about this product and I quickly forgot about it until it showed up at our office a few days ago. I had no idea that this would be one of the most impressive products I've tested in years.

This Is Your Last Chance To Enter Fstoppers' Hilarious Photoshop Competition

During our 4 month project with Elia Locardi I didn't shave once. During this time my beard got a little out of control. Last week I had a little fun shaving it off slowly and creating portraits of myself as different characters. I'm now giving out the raw files to you, to abuse them as you see fit.

I've Lost Interest In Social Media And It Is Hurting My Business

I must be getting old. This year I will turn 32 and as each day of my life passes I care about social media sites less and less. I can remember when a Facebook "like" used to excite me. Those days are long gone, I simply do not care anymore, and my business is struggling because of it.

Reserve Your Seat At The Fstoppers Workshops 2015 for $500

The Fstoppers Workshops is back again for 2015 with the best photography workshops on the incredible island of Nassau in the Bahamas. If you are planning on coming but do not have the full amount saved, you can reserve all of your photography workshops for just $500 before they sell out.

The Fstoppers FlashDisc Is Almost Completely Sold Out

I want to thank everyone who has already purchased the Fstoppers FlashDisc. You have helped make our first ever physical product the number 1 selling flash modifier on Amazon.com. That being said, I wanted to give everyone a fair warning that we only have a few days of inventory left.

Watch This Incredible Timelapse and Drone Footage of Iceland

Patrick and I have been in Iceland for 2 weeks with Elia Locardi filming our next tutorial on landscape/travel photography. We brought a truck-load of gear with us but our favorite piece has been our DJI phantom quadcopter. Here's a quick cut of our best drone footage in Iceland.

The Fstoppers FlashDisc Is Available in Canada For Tonight Only

The photography megastore B&H has purchased 50 FlashDiscs from us as a "test run" and they just went on sale minutes ago. B&H will ship anywhere in the world (if you are wiling to pay the shipping costs) but shipping to Canada is particularly reasonable. Jump on this before they sell out in a few hours.

Fstoppers Newest Tutorial With Dylan Patrick Is Now Available

6 months ago Dylan Patrick flew to Charleston SC for a week to film our latest tutorial; The Cinematic Headshot. As always, editing this 6 hour tutorial was much more difficult than we expect but I'm excited to announce that it is finally available.

The Fstoppers FlashDisc Is Available in Europe, Today Only

UPDATE: They are sold out. The Fstoppers FlashDisc has become the number 1 selling flash modifier on Amazon US. We are working as quickly as we can to get the FlashDisc in other countries but it's a slow process. We are currently running a test with 50 units in Europe and they are available for purchase right now.

Why I Will Never Hire An Art School Graduate

Why is it so hard to hire someone to fill a creative position? At this point I'm afraid that art school might be making most graduates unemployable egomaniacs. I know this because I used to be one.

Fstoppers.com Is Hiring More Paid Writers

Fstoppers.com is once again in need of more paid writers. We are in need of standard writers who must be full time professionals in the industry and junior writers who can be amateurs and are able to posts content found around the web.

How To Light And Photograph A Beer Bottle Advertisement

Last year Fstoppers threw its very first live photography workshop in the Bahamas and world class food and drink photographer Rob Grimm was one of the instructors. I was able to sit in on a bit of Rob's class and I learned a ton about photographing drinks. We just got our new order of FlashDiscs in and I decided to try a shot of my own using the new modifiers.

The Fstoppers FlashDisc Is Back In Stock

7 years ago I created a portable softbox that could fit in my pocket while I shot weddings. Three years ago, Patrick and I attempted to patent that idea and bring the product to market. In December of 2013, we put our first 1,000 units up for sale on Fstoppers and sold out within 24 hours.

Fstoppers Is Coming To Europe For A Road Trip And Photokina

This Thursday September 4th Patrick and I are flying into Amsterdam for a 20 day tour of Europe. At this point we don't have anything set in stone but our basic goal is to go from Amsterdam to Berlin to Prague to Austria to northern Italy to Switzerland, and then to Cologne Germany for the end of Photokina. If you live in any of these countries/cities we would love to meet up.

Scientists Can Recover Audio From Silent Video With Rolling Shutter

This is quite possibly one of the creepiest videos I've seen in a very long time. Scientists can now create audio from the slight motion caused by sound waves found in videos.      With high speed video of an everyday object like a plant of a bag of chips, computers can see the microscopic movement that the sound on an object produces.

Nikon Is Giving Brand New D610 Cameras To D600 Owners

Remember the Nikon D600? It's a great camera other than the fact that the shutter would spray oil all over the sensor. The oil can't easily be seen at wide open apertures but it's a major problem when you stop down. Due to a class action lawsuit Nikon is replacing D600s with new D610... For some people.

Fstoppers Workshops 2015 Dates Announced

We are currently finalizing all of the instructors for Fstoppers Workshops 2015 which will be held once again at Atlantis Resort in the Bahamas. The next event will take place from May 13-17 2015. Check out our quick promo to see a glimpse of this years event.

Buy The Studio Gear We Used To Start Fstoppers And Our Photography Careers

12 years ago I assisted a commercial photographer and I fell in love with photography and decided to make it my career. I started little by little buying all of the gear from another fellow photographer in an attempt to go pro as soon as I graduated college. Tomorrow, all of that gear will be sold.

Nikon D810 Review VS D800 VS 5D3 VS FS700

I believe that the Nikon D810 is currently the best all around camera you can buy for the money ($3300) even with competition from Sony's A7R. The more difficult question comes from current D800 owners like me; "Is this camera worth upgrading to?" The answer isn't cut and dry.

How To Photograph And Light Real Estate At Dusk On A Budget

Last year we teamed up with Mike Kelley to produce the 7+ hour tutorial: How To Photograph Real Estate, Architecture and Interiors. We were fearful that Mike's fancy equipment would be discouraging to new photographers so we asked Mike if he could create a signature image with much cheaper gear.

Will GoPro Continue On As The Most Successful Camera Of All Time Or Fail?

On June 25th, the action/sports camera GoPro went public and their stock grew 50% in value overnight. Their 2013 earnings were almost 1 billion dollars and their small, tough, and waterproof camera has become the world's highest selling camera. Can this company's growth continue?
