I shot this photo of the Niles Flying A Gas Station in Fremont California earlier this month on my first roll of film with a Rolleiflex Automat. It’s a camera from the early 1950s that originally belonged to my uncle. He recently passed it down to me, which made this experience even more meaningful. I loaded the camera with Kodak Portra 400. Slowed down and enjoyed the process. Shooting film like this really gave me a new appreciation for what it meant to be a photographer back then. We’ve got it so easy now. Currently shooting with a Sony a7R V.
Here's a photo I took more recently at the same location with Stacy with a Sony a7R III. But in this instance, I have to experiment with different color tones in Lightroom to get the vintage look: https://kisau.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/10/d09cd0bed0bdd182d0b0d0b6d0b...
Think I'd like to have had more of the gas pumps on the left included in the frame... they would seem to tell more of the vintage story than the windows on the right. My 2¢ for what it's worth.
Agreed, Ed. Shooting for the first time with a waist-level, mirror-reversed viewfinder was definitely a challenge—which explains why the image isn’t as level as I’d like. I’m also still getting used to the framing differences between what I see in the viewfinder and what the lens actually captures—it ended up feeling a bit too cropped. Definitely something I want to get a better handle on.
