Apple Announces New iPhone SE

Today's Apple event brought a ton of exciting new devices for photographers and filmmakers, including a nice update to the iPhone SE, their popular low-cost iPhone, that makes it quite appealing to photographers, filmmakers, and regular users alike. Let's take a look.

iPhone SE 3

Apple's affordable and popular iPhone model sees its third generation this year. The SE series has become quite popular, offering the iPhone experience at a significantly more affordable price than other models. It has gained several new features and improvements in its third iteration, and it looks like a real winner:

  • 4.7-inch Retina display
  • Aerospace-grade aluminum and glass design
  • IP67 dust and water resistance
  • Home button with Touch ID
  • A15 Bionic chip (the same as the iPhone 13)
  • 16-core Neural engine
  • Improved battery life
  • Qi wireless charging
  • 12-megapixel f/1.8 wide camera featuring:
    • Smart HDR 4
    • Photographic Styles
    • Deep Fusion
    • Portrait mode
  • 5G data

The new iPhone SE will come in midnight, starlight, and (PRODUCT)RED options with 64, 128, or 256 GB of storage. Prices will start at $429, with preorders starting on March 11 and availability on March 18. Altogether, it looks like quite a well-rounded and affordable phone for a wide range of users.

Does anyone know what a filmmaker might find appealing about a budget iPhone?

A good camera suitable for b-roll at an affordable price.

Thanks for the info. I don’t know much about filmmaking, but it does strike me that after setting up sets, lighting, actors/models etc you’d end up using a phone instead of a decent camera? If you were advertising or demonstrating a phone then of course you would, otherwise I struggle to understand the reasoning.

The point is they are more capable than one would think. I'm sure there are filmmakers that use phones just like there are photographers that use phones.
