Maximize the Speed of Your Online Photography Portfolio With a Better Export Strategy

Contrary to delusional beliefs, not everyone is hooked up to a high-speed connection capable of streaming 8k video at magnificent buttery smoothness. Extremely fast connectivity is an amazing thing that is still out of reach for the vast majority of users. You can't assume that the viewers of your website are going to be piloting a computer hard-lined into the latest fiber optic goodness. Instead, we have to optimize for the most common user in order to give them the best experience possible without sacrificing image quality.

[Video] Behind the Glass with Vincent Laforet & Blake Whitman

In this series of videos aimed towards novices, Vincent Laforet and Blake Whitman from Vimeo Video School give you a breakdown on the lenses used in video production and their specific characteristics. This video is aimed at beginners, so seasoned shooters might want to pass, but it's shot and organized so well even if you know the difference between a wide-angle and a standard lens you still might want to give it a look, especially video #2. They go into details regarding how focal length effects framing, compression, depth-of-field, distortion, and they're proper uses for storytelling, dialogue shots, and providing context within your frame. Is This the Ultimate Photography Accessory?

When I first started my photography journey, I was full of hope, excitement, and wonder about what adventure the day would bring me. The challenge for me was that it was just a day before I either had to head home again or find a place to stay, so I could spend more time in a certain location.

5 Ways To Keep A Model Warm When Shooting In The Snow

As a photographer who happens to live in Canada, shooting in the winter for me often means braving the snow. The problem with snow is that it means facing the cold. As the photographer you are more that free to bundle up in order to stay warm. However, the model often is much more limited by wardrobe which is an excellent recipe for hypothermia. Goose bumps are an utter pain to retouch so my best advice for you is to come prepared to keep your model reasonably warm.

To keep chugging along through the daily grind, most of us have to make work fun so that it becomes, well, less like work. Darrel from BGS Studios is a fantasy and sci-fan photographer who obviously loves what he does: making the fantasy just a little closer to reality. Click here to watch the BTSV and see the finals from his Marvel-Comics-inspired Emma Frost shoot.

G-Technology G-Drive ev ATC with Thunderbolt Hands-On Review

If you’re a professional in the media industry and a Mac user, you’ve undoubtedly heard of and likely love G-Technology’s storage solutions (not that PC users have a reason not to, though). While G-Tech has largely been typecast an in-studio brand (with the LaCie Rugged drives taking a bulk of the on-the-road abuse), G-Tech’s newest offerings include their ATC lineup that helps close the gap, bringing them into the “all-terrain” hard drive space.

Peak Design Calls out Amazon for Ripping Off One of Its Bags

We’re used to obscure manufacturers from distant countries coming up with close copies of established gear, but you don’t necessarily expect it from Amazon. Peak Design has noticed a striking similarity between its Everyday Sling and a bag sold via Amazon Basics, and the company decided to poke some fun by putting together a video.

I’m A Quitter, And You Should Be Too!

Quitting gets a bad rap. There is a certain stigma attached to the quitter as if they have somehow failed. We offer them compassion instead of congratulations. We imagine they are haunted by countless "what if's" and regrets. We muse that perhaps there were circumstances beyond their control. What if I told you that quitting can be the ultimate form of regaining direction and control in your life?

How To Prep, Fly, And Photograph with A Quadcopter Drone On Location

If you've ever thought about trying out a drone, you probably have heard how complicated it is. Sure, there are easier systems to use like the DJI Phantom, but there is still a learning curve that you need to overcome before you should fly and shoot with a drone on your own, especially before an important shoot... and also before any situation where you may possibly LOSE the drone. Watch the video and learn more below.

Mark calls this lens "the magic lens" because of it's incredibly shallow depth of field that can make almost any location look amazing. For a similar look check out the critically acclaimed 85mm 1.4 by Sigma.

[Video] Impressive Short Film Of Chicago Uses Timelapse, Slow-Mo

There are a lot of timelapse and slow-mo shorts out there, but rarely do they have a narrative. “Projecting Reflections” is a short film by Preston Kanak and crew that blends these techniques and adds an alluring voiceover, and the result is something more than just a pretty video. I don’t know about you guys, but I’m loving all of these timelapse videos that have come out lately depicting cities around the world. How about you?

How to Work with an Assistant or Second Shooter

At some point or another, most of us photographers will have a chance to work a job that requires us to hire help. It may be a one-off, or perhaps your studio has come to a point where hiring a full-time assistant makes sense. There are so many factors that go into hiring another person, even full-time. Thinking of the expense, the role that person will play, and how they will fit into your style are just the beginning of these considerations.

Why would they bother to do it as a physical effect? Boy was I wrong. The artist Dan Tobin Smith did the cover as a completely physical effect.
