I was commissioned to photograph interior designer Corey Damen Jenkins in his small office in Birmingham, Michigan before his move to New York. Corey is known for bold and sophisticated design and style. I used a Profoto B1, placed a paul buff umbrella with diffuser high above him and created short lighting to define his face and create a bit of mood while also spilling some stray light on the wall paper behind him. We had extremely low ceilings but I was able to just barely keep it out of frame. I chose an aperture of F2.8 to highlight the wallpaper pattern behind him that showcased his interior design vision and yet keeping the focus on his profile. The subtle yet bold patterns of his suit and shirt also play with the patterns of the wallpaper nicely. Every aspect of his style choice was important - his circular frames and even the minimal pop of color in his pocket square were integral to the image. Had I used a higher depth of field, the image would have become too busy in my opinion.
