The monumental staircase in the Monastery of San Giorgio on Isola San Giorgio Maggiore was designed by Baldassare Longhena and built between 1641 and 1643. Leading to the abbot's living quarters, it features gallery windows that allow in abundant natural light, as well as rich polychrome marble decoration on the floors and balustrades. The staircase is a striking example of Longhena's Baroque style and a significant work of art on the island. It is a popular destination for visitors touring the island and the monastery.
The monastery was restored by the Giorgio Cini Foundation and now serves as its headquarters and cultural center.
