GPP Shoot Out 2011: Zack Arias VS Joey L

Each year Gulf Photo Plus takes place in Dubai. During part of the show they pit 2 or more photographers against each other in a surprise photoshoot. Last year the shoot out involved Zack, Joey, and David Hobby of Strobist but this time Zack and Joey were the only shooters. This years subject was quite a surprise and a bit more difficult to shoot than the beautiful women they had last year. I'm not a huge fan of the finished images but I'm not sure what other options these guys had. Check out Zack's blog to read about his thought process while he was shooting.

Chase Jarvis Shoots Womens PGA (A While Ago)

What does a guy have to do to find a high quality, informative BTSV around here? Apparently I have to start looking at videos that were released years ago. Here is a quick BTS Chase made over 2 years ago. We haven't ever posted it but if you have seen it, don't get mad at us; good BTSVs are hard to come by these days. ><
[BTS Video] How Those Amazing Time-Lapse Videos Were Made From Space

The ISO sensitivity on today's flagship DSLR cameras is pretty amazing. They are so amazing in fact that for the first time, NASA is able to use Nikon D3 cameras to create night time timelapse videos as the earth sleeps. You've probably seen a bunch of these stunning videos here but now we are able to see who is responsible for capturing the raw images from orbit. Mike Massimino takes you behind the scenes with astronaut/photographer Mike Fossum as he talks about his passion for long exposure photography from space. The audio is pretty rough so use headphones if you have trouble hearing.
Photographic Virtues Series: Teamwork

In this series, I attempt to identify the key professional virtues I have found to be the most important in building my own career, as well as identifying traits of other successful photographers that are most key to their success. Today’s virtue: teamwork.

March Photo Contest: Three Days Left To Enter

It's almost the end of the month which means entries to the March Fstoppers Forum Photo Contest are due! Previous winner Julius picked the theme "COLLABORATION," and as part of his prize, he will be picking the March winner. The winner of this month's contest will also judge and pick the theme for April, get their own rotating banner at the top of Fstoppers for a month, and win a Photoflex Starlite QL constant light for photography and video. Not everyone has been as creative with the theme "collaboration" as I would have hoped but that means it's still anyone's game on who will win. Good luck to all!
The Fstoppers Monthly Photography Contest

Our big contest is about to end but we thought it would be fun to start up a monthly contest. Obviously we can't afford to give away a new camera every month but we can offer up our coveted banner space at the top of our site. So far we have only given out banners to big name contributors of our site. We have had other photographers offer to pay us for the clickable space and we turned them down. We have decided to do a monthly photography contest and the winner will get their picture and link to their website in flash banner at the top of our site for the next full month. This month the theme of your pictures must be "technology". At the end of August I will chose my favorite image and the photographer will win the banner placement for the next month. The winner will also get to choose next months theme and choose the winner. Please post your "technology" pictures here. Is this a good idea? Will you participate? Let me know in the comments below.
The Winner For The Fstoppers Workshops Announced Below | PRO EDU

Last week we announced a contest for an all access pass to PRO EDU's workshops down in the Bahamas this year with the Fstoppers & Rob Grimm. Thanks to everyone that entered the contest sponsored by Black Rapid, ROSCO, and Resolution Rentals. Below are the winners!

BTSV Contest Winner: Paddy Fernandez

I am happy to say that our contest is finally over and Paddy Fernandez has won by a landslide (93 votes, Sans was second with 51). As promised, Paddy will get to choose between a Nikon D300s or a Canon 7D. With this camera we hope that Paddy will continue to create BTSVs for us and now they will be in beautiful HD. I know that the voting for this contest has not gone as smoothly as we all would have wanted but we can say that there was no cheating involved and we jumped the gun when we paused the contest. In the future we will probably have some sort of celebrity judge panel for our big contests to keep issues like this from happening. Please congratulate Paddy and give us ideas for the next contest in the comment box below. Also, don't forget about our monthly photography contest.

Natural Talent Is a Made-Up Excuse to Not Move Forward

Natural talent is something often attributed left and right to people. Talent is quite mysterious; no one can put their finger on what it is. If it’s there, you can make it, but if it’s not, you cant. But is it all a made-up excuse? It might be.

Fstoppers Photographer of the Month (September 2023): Yong Lei van Barlingen

The Fstoppers community is brimming with creative vision and talent. Every day, we comb through your work, looking for images to feature as the Photo of the Day or simply to admire your creativity and technical prowess. In 2023, we're featuring a new photographer every month, whose portfolio represents both stellar photographic achievement and a high level of involvement within the Fstoppers community.

Projecting Into the Future: Anticipate Your Subjects

Photography is all about time. It's the only visual art that is able to hold a single moment and fix it for our lasting consideration. To make that happen we as photographers must be keenly aware of both the slice of time that we are capturing and the all the time which leads up to that important moment. To do this well we must look into the future.

Searching for Inspiration: Cinema the Closest Relative

Looking at other photographers’ work for inspiration can be overwhelming. With an almost unlimited amount of photography to look through, I can feel lost. I often turn to other mediums to look for inspiration.

Photokina: Not Cancelled Yet?

Merriam Webster defines tone-deaf as: "having or showing an obtuse insensitivity or lack of perception, particularly in matters of public sentiment, opinion, or taste." I thought they'd have illustrated the definition with photokina by now.

Zena Holloway Shoots Underwater

Take a look at what a real underwater shoot looks like. This video is great but it isn't half as impressive as Zena's full portfolio. <
