An Fstoppers Contest Update: Battle On The Racetrack

Within 24 hours of announcing the Fstoppers 2011 Behind The Scenes Video Contest, we were shocked to already have our first submission. Marc Kuyer from Holland had an idea to have small model cars battling each other like they were straight out of Rock and Roll Racing (super cult classic). Marc does a good job outlining his plans and showing you all the photoshopping that went into this final image. Of course we'd love to see everyone on camera but sometimes with language barriers you may have to stick with subtitles and text. So I guess it's safe to say right now Marc has taken the lead in our contest. If no one else steps up to the plate he will be moving on from small speed lights to a full studio worth of equipment!
StudioShare.org: Why Did This Take Me So Long To Find?

In my experience there are 2 types of photographers. 1, you have a studio but you don't shoot in it as much as you wish you could or 2, you don't have a studio but you always wish that you did. I personally am the type 1 photographer. I do have a small studio but it does not get used very often. I have just been turned on to StudioShare.org and this site may be a huge help to everyone. If your studio space sits empty as much as mine, you might be interested in turning it into cash. StudioShare.org allows you to rent both gear and studio space to other professional photographers. If you are a photographer without a studio and don't have thousands of dollars a day in your budget, StudioShare.org may help you get that studio that you have always wanted at an incredibly low price. You can also list the services you offer and get hired for gigs--everything from makeup artists to assistants. So anyway, I contacted StudioShare and they agreed to give FS readers a full year for free, just type in "fstoppers-free" when you sign up into the coupon section. You can't beat that!

New Shared Camera App by Hipstamatic Is Fun and Frustrating

A new filtered camera app that allows groups of mobile photographers to share in a timed shootout was released for iOS last week by app developer Hipstamatic. The free app, called DSPO, creates a collaboration of images via gallery or slideshow that none of the contributors can view until the session expires. But in a mobile photography world ruled by Instagram, Snapchat, and VSCO Cam, does DSPO stand a chance?

Matthew McConaughy Directs Country Star Jamey Johnson's Video

A few months ago I got a call from one of country star Jamey Johnson's managers asking me to take some photographs of him while he was passing through South Carolina. Since Jamey was born in my hometown of Enterprise Alabama I was pretty excited to work with the real deal country artist (not a pop country bone in this guy for sure). Long story short our schedules weren't able to work. So I was excited today when I came across a BTS video of his new single Playing the Part which was directed by Matthew McConaughy. Few people ever get to experience what it's like on set of a music video so I thought this tongue in cheek video was a good way for you guys to watch how it all goes down. Shot with a Canon 5D MarkII and a Canon T2i, this is definitely a forerunner in the contest.

Nominate Fstoppers For "Best Online Media/News Resource"

Fstoppers is a young brand: in three short years, we've come a long way. What started as a small video blog for founders Lee Morris and Patrick Hall has grown into a media/news site that brings you the latest from the world of photo and video every day. We've been working hard to continue to grow, and we do it because we are just a bunch of photographers who love what we do and love sharing it. 2012 was a breakout year for us, and we would be hugely appreciative if you helped cap it off by nominating us for a [F]ramed award.

Unsung Hero Of Lighting: We Review The Spekular KYU-6

There are plenty of difficult lighting scenarios when conventional solutions simply can't deliver. Be it weight, space, or any other limitation, small lights are a must in any photographer's kit. Despite not being the most powerful, they are often most used on sets and locations. Among the sea of small lights, a few stand out. One such one is the Specular KYU-6. Here are my thoughts on this light.

The Christmas Wish Project Brings Even More Smiles to Sick Children for 2017

The Christmas Wish, which has become an annual viral sensation put out over the last few years by The Heart Project is back and even bigger for 2017. In 2016, the project created holiday magic for 30 sick children from one hospital. This year Karen Alsop, the lead photographer behind the project, took it countrywide in Australia reaching even more people in need and this is just the beginning.

Care to Share Which Non-Photographers Influence and Inspire You?

I get it. Ansel Adams inspires you. Perhaps Bresson, and maybe Gursky too. But there's another world of creative geniuses outside the realms of photography where you can draw creative ideas and energy from. Here are two people that influence me.

Merry Christmas From The Jersey Shore

We hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas Day and even got a few new toys to play around with. Lee and I are currently both back home with our families as many of you are yourself. So instead of going all out with a really in-depth video I figured I'd share something a little less serious that you may find amusing. The new season of Jersey Shore is coming out in Jan and MTv just released a new BTS video to promote it. My question to you is "If you had to photograph the entire cast of Jersey Shore, what would you do?" Jersey Shore - MTV Shows

An Australian Photographer is Hosting his Charitable Art Exhibit Inside Minecraft

For many, the name "Minecraft" evokes images of 12-year-olds toiling away in a cube-like virtual world. The image is surely foreign to much of our readership. But the foreign and new are now commonplace, and we are sure to see new uses for virtual worlds of all kinds — even art galleries and fundraisers.

How to Record Better Audio: We Review the Saramonic MV7000

Times when the main creative outlet for photographers was taking and editing photos are long gone. For many, recording videos plays an equally important role now. But, the creation of videos is not only about the visuals. Audio is equally important. And for it, you need a good microphone, like the Saramonic MV7000.

Only two months after it was released, the Elinchrom Skyport HS for Olympus is getting an update and now supports Panasonic cameras. It still does not support Fujifilm, but it seems like the Swiss flash manufacturer is heading in the right direction by adding more devices to its supported cameras list.
