Travel and street photographers need a bag—but something too big draws attention and can become a burden if it's on your shoulder and you're on your feet all day. The other option is a backpack, but they tend to be too big and bulky, and can become a nuisance when you're in a crowd. I can't tell you the number of times I've turned to take a shot and ended up knocking into someone with a pack on my back. The answer, then, is a very small shoulder bag or sling—so small and well-shaped you barely notice you have it.

Much of the time, we take photographs because of how something looks. We’re drawn to pretty views with nice light or color; views that look visually appealing. Let’s be clear: there’s nothing wrong with this approach to photography.

I’ve owned a Viltrox AF 85mm f/1.8 for a few years now, and it’s been one of two lenses I take everywhere with me, the other being a 35mm f/1.8. I should say "My Essential Lens Filters." I get a lot of people asking what I use, so I thought I’d share what they are. I have a few filters that go everywhere with me. Sometimes they reside in a backpack when on an outdoor adventure, or in a small shoulder bag when exploring urban environments. The answer is to carry a small, light camera that you barely notice you have with you.

Some say film photography is better than digital. Film has a more organic, natural look. Shooting with an analogue camera is a better experience and a purer form of photography. Others say digital photography is better because computer technology makes photography easier. You can shoot more frames and focus quicker, and experiment more by shooting more without the need for a second mortgage. Buckle up, this might get ranty.

Shooting portraits in natural light, if you get it right, can be very rewarding. You can easily create beautiful, moody, and very natural photos—with just a camera in your hand and a willing subject in front of you. Here are some thoughts that may help you get the best possible results.
