Low Flying across the Beach

While walking along the beach at a rocky cove at Porpoise Bay New Zealand we saw this very nervous Little Penguin (commonly known as the fairy penguin, little blue penguin, or blue penguin) on the rocks. Little penguins are the smallest of all penguin species. It was being watched by a very large seagull, at least twice its size.

It took off trying to make it to the safety of the ocean. I happened to be in the right position to capture it running for its life across the beach. In this photo the Little Penguin is completely airborne and moving as fast as its legs could carry it.

The seagull did swoop down and attacked the penguin just as it got to the water's edge. I did at that point chase off the seagull and the penguin escaped.
