Waiting Patiently and Humbly

Leucistic squirrels are white or pale-furred squirrels with dark eyes, resulting from a genetic mutation causing partial loss of pigmentation. Unlike albinos, they retain dark eyes and sometimes patches of normal coloration. While rare, these squirrels are more common than albinos and are sometimes spotted in specific, isolated populations.

This is one of two leucistic squirrels close to the little bridge along the Fenwood Trail in Banff, AB. In early March after some snowfall we staked out the area and our patience was rewarded by seeing both of them in the early morning. These are American Red Squirrels.
