Strutting in the Snow

During a recent Snowy Owl Prowl around the Beiseker, AB we regularly saw small flocks of Gray Partridges, but they would run or fly off the moment we got close. Makes it very difficult to get a great photo.

We had a small flock run parallel to dead-end gravel road, so we knew there was no traffic. Even though I was in the driver's seat, I had my camera pointed out the window using the gas pedal to match the flock and my wife reaching over and steering the vehicle. We were moving very slow, thus safely. This was only real way to get a great photo.

The Partridge is running through a harvested grain field and with the recent hoar frost and rime ice the remaining stalks look like a stunted icy tree forest.
